Capacity building activities on energy systems analysis support energy and electrification planning

Capacity building activities on energy systems analysis to support energy and electrification planning in Sierra Leone, run by , in collaboration with Oxford Policy Management , are now creating impact. Agreements are being signed between KTH  and University of Sierra Leone (USL)  to jointly develop teaching modules on energy systems analysis into existing courses at USL. Additionally, USL, in cooperation with KTH and the Sierra Leone Millennium Challenge Coordinating Unit (MCCU) , is organising trainings in open source tools for energy systems planning for the Ministry of Energy, the national Association of Engineers, the electricity Transmission and the electricity Distribution system utilities, the Water and Energy Regulatory Agency. These aim to support creation of capacity for the Energy Modelling Unit which will contribute to the National Energy Strategy. The capacity building program which led to these outcomes started with training of teaching staff from the University of Sierra Leone (USL), prof. Samba Sesay, prof. David Caulker and prof. Michael Conteh, both at the Energy Modelling Platform for Africa (EMP-A) 2019  and the Joint Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development 2019. It continued with a visit of , from KTH-dESA, to Freetown in August 2019. During this visit, meetings were set up with authorities and teaching staff at USL, to develop teaching modules on energy systems analysis in existing courses. Furthermore, KTH and USL co-organised several meetings with national institutions involved in energy planning, to illustrate the role of modelling to support the development of national strategies.
