Sustainable Energy Technology Programme Students Drive Impact in Climate-Neutral Stockholm Project
Recently, four students from various KTH programs—Magdalena Smolic, Zin Haji, Hsu-Kai Weng,—alongside a student from Uppsala University, Maurine Luquet, collaborated with Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, developing their thesis projects within the framework of the "Climate-Neutral Stockholm 2030" initiative. Smolic, Haji, Weng, and Luquet explored how municipal schools can incorporate circularity principles into daily educational practices, supporting Stockholm's climate ambitions.
The results of their research are incorporated in recently completed project, titled ”Klimatneutrala Stockholm 2030 Förstudie Återbruk” (in English: Climate Neutral Stockholm: Prestudy Reuse) by Stockholm Vatten och Avfall. Running from October 2021 to September 2024, the initiative focused on advancing reuse strategies to align with Stockholm’s climate neutrality and circularity goals.
Magdalena and Zin, graduates from the Sustainabel Energy Thechnology Programme at Energy Technology Department under the supervision of Maryna Henrysson from the Energy Systems Division and with support from Karin Sundin and the team at Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, successfully defended their thesis, “Investigating the Potential of Circular Economy in Stockholm’s Craft Classes”, last summer. They provided valuable insights for the municipality on the potential to scale up reuse and repurpose efforts.
Students who choose to complete their master’s thesis within our “ Sustainable Energy Engineering ” program through the Energy Systems Division have a unique opportunity to make tangible contributions to decision-making processes and work alongside real-world actors driving sustainable and circular practices forward. This collaboration across KTH schools, KTH and Uppsala, and with Stockholm’s municipal authorities is a testament to the power of shared knowledge in advancing sustainability.
