Membrane distillation for advanced wastewater treatment in the semiconductor industry

Wastewater streams can be harnessed to recover valuable materials in a circular manufacturing concept. In this project we will investigate how membrane distillation can play a role for wastewater treatment, leading to improved environmental performance and energy savings through waste heat utilization.

Background

The semiconductor industry features some of the most advanced manufacturing steps seen anywhere, and has high demands on precision and material stream purity. Ultrapure water is employed as a rinsing agent, which in turn generates wastewater that is increasingly subject to more stringent controls (e.g. via EU Water Directive). In the future these wastewater streams can be harnessed to recover valuable materials in a circular manufacturing concept. Membrane distillation can play an important role for wastewater treatment in this application, leading to improved environmental performance and energy savings through waste heat utilization.
