FRONTSH1P — A FRONTrunner approach to Systemic circular, Holistic & Inclusive solutions for a New Paradigm of territorial circular economy

FRONTSH1P, centered in Poland’s Łódzkie region, aims to lead the way in transitioning from a linear to a circular economy. Over the next four years, it will develop and demonstrate Circular Systemic Solutions in key sectors like packaging, food, water, and plastics. These solutions will also be implemented in other European regions, fostering Circular Regional Clusters and involving diverse stakeholders. The project boasts a consortium of 35 partners from nine European countries, ensuring a well-balanced representation across the circular economy value chain and related fields.

Background

To ensure the green and just transition of the Polish Łódzkie Region towards decarbonization and territorial regeneration FRONTSH1P deploys four highly replicable, modular and scalable Circular Systemic Solutions (CSSs) for territorial regeneration based on a multi-stakeholder approach putting citizens needs at the centre of development. This systemic approach addresses four key strategic sectors targeted by the new EU CEAP that are linked with the decarbonisation of Europe, namely: Wood Packaging, Food and Feed, Water and Nutrients as well as Plastics and Rubber.

In this project, KTH is the leader of Task 6.3 on the development and validation of a new molten salt based process for disposing waste plastics, including insulating foam with PVC, rubber scraps, PE scraps and mixed plastic scraps from house waste. Three different molten salt based thermal pyrolysis reactor concepts will be assessed. The process should also include pretreatment steps for different types of plastic, including pre-heating, dechlorinating, desulfurization. The composition of the final products will be characterized according to the different operating parameters. A scaling study will also be conducted to analyze technical and economical feasibilities. Kflex will analyze Chlorine containing oil for feasibility assessment of the pyrolysis process combined with foam manufacture.

For mixed waste streams of high variables in terms of waste stream composition needs to be identified properly in order to know what material is going to be pyrolyzed and thus forecast overall useable output from the pyrolysis which would serve as an input for chemical crosslinking and supercritical carbon dioxide compression, forming the basis for the manufacturing process of circular insulation material at K-Flex.

Aims and objectives

The FRONTSH1P project is the pilot that during the next four years will steer the Łódzkie region, Campania, Sterea Ellada, Norte, Friesland, and hopefully many others, towards a more circular and sustainable future.
